The Rite Flight Program consists of two parts: A Classroom Reading Rate Program and Rite Flight: A Classroom Comprehension Program. These programs equip teachers and reading specialists to help students increase their reading rate, fluency, and comprehension.

Rite Flight programs were designed to be Tier II interventions for use by classroom teachers, reading specialists and special education teachers with first through eighth grade students. They can be used as supplemental or intervention instruction for individuals, small groups or the whole classroom.

Rite Flite: A Classroom Reading Rate Program

The National Reading Panel includes fl uency as one of the necessary elements of effective reading instruction. Students with poor reading fluency read haltingly, severely limiting their understanding of passage meaning. They ignore punctuation so that phrases and sentences become meaningless combinations of words. Because dysfluent readers struggle with reading tasks, they avoid required reading and rarely read for pleasure. As a result, they spend less time reading and fall further behind their peers.

Rite Flight: A Classroom Reading Rate Program can be used as supplemental or intervention instruction by classroom teachers, reading specialists and special education teachers for students in grades one through eight. It can be used with students individually, in classrooms or small groups.

When used as a supplement, Rite Flight: Rate should be integrated into a core reading program to adequately address fluency. As a fluency component of primary grade reading remediation and instruction, Rite Flight: Rate should be introduced early in the course of instruction in letter-sound recognition and should not be delayed until after phonics has been taught. The program can be used in conjunction with a variety of core reading curricula that employ evidence-based components in phonemic awareness and phonics. Rite Flight: Rate may be used for more intensive instruction within the framework of a Response-to-Intervention (RTI) reading instruction model.

Rite Flight: Rate is not intended to be used in place of a comprehensive intervention for students identified with dyslexia, as it addresses only one component of reading.

Rite Flite: A Classroom Reading Comprehension Program

The National Reading Panel refers to comprehension as the essence of reading. Most educators agree that understanding text is the primary goal of reading. Achieving that goal requires instruction that includes direct teaching of comprehension strategies, modeling of strategy use, specific feedback and ample opportunity for practice.

Rite Flight: A Classroom Comprehension Program can be used as supplemental or intervention instruction by classroom teachers, reading specialists and special education teachers for students in grades one through grade eight. It can be used with students individually, in small groups or in the classroom.

When used as a supplement, Rite Flight: Comprehension may also be used for more intensive instruction within the framework of a Response-to Intervention (RTI) model of reading instruction. The decision to use Rite Flight: Comprehension as an intervention for struggling readers in Tier Two or Tier Three should be guided by an evaluation of possible reasons for reading comprehension problems.

These reasons could include:

• difculties with accurate and uent word recognition
• limited vocabulary or background knowledge
• weaknesses in higher order language
• deciencies in the use of text structure
• failure to employ strategies to read on the meaning of text

Rite Flight: Comprehension is not intended to be used in place of a comprehensive intervention for students identified with dyslexia, as it addresses only one component of reading.
